Mary Wairimu a Small scale farmer in Murang’a East subcounty which is one of the project area where SACDEP is implementing WLG8 project is one of the beneficiaries of energy saving stove given to her by SACDEP. She cannot hide her smile since she has been enjoying cooking with the stove which has a lot of benefit to her.
Before the stove she used to have a 3 stone jiko which was consuming a lot of firewood and also it was producing a lot smoke. Fire wood is scarce in the area and sometimes they are forced to by of which a load of 50 sticks goes for Kshs 100. This was weighing down on her considering she does not have any source of income apart from small scale farming. This has been addressed by the construction of energy saving stove. Energy saving stove uses very few firewood, actually two sticks of firewood are enough to cook a meal for either breakfast, lunch or supper. She now can save Kshs 100 she was using to buy firewood on daily bases. She now uses the money for other uses such as saving in the BWW.
Previously there was a lot of smoke in her kitchen and this was really affecting her eyes as well as respiratory system. This has been greatly reduced after the construction of the energy saving stove. Biils for hospital to visit eye clinic has been saved as well as fees to see the doctor due to respiratory system complications. She now has increased her savings from Kshs 200 to Kshs 300 per month.
She is very grateful to SCADEP for saving her from all the problems she was experiencing from her cooking. To her this is a success story in her life for having been able to benefit with the construction of energy saving stove.
